In line with one of our commitment to build the quality of teachers in Indonesia, HDI Foundation successfully conducted its first in-house teachers training. The training titled “Community School: Integrated School Management” was held on July 3-5th 2008 at HDI Foundation training centre, Jakarta. As an initial training, we purposely invited teachers from Jabodetabek area only, in particular schools that we have built and managed since 2005. This also became as an active step to support our Train Teachers Program.
Twenty one teachers and principals from MI Al Istiqomah Elementary School (Jakarta), Teluknaga Junior High School (Tangerang) and Pangerasan Junior High School (Bogor) took part as the participants in this training. Wahjudin Sumpeno, an community development practitioner from World Bank-Indonesia, who has the expertise and been involved in delivering practical methodological training in educational and conflict management areas, performed as the facilitator.
In particular, the objectives of this training are:
To present new perspective or insight of modern school management method by identifying and analyzing school’s basic need and other contemporary issues comprehensively.
To supply the management of the school with sufficient knowledge and skill regarding measurement and judgment of school capacity from legal perspective, organization, human resources, financial, networking and curriculum.
To utilize professional aptitude for the school management in formulating integrated school planning through the total strategic planning implementation.
Topics covered in this workshop included the areas of Rapid School Appraisal (RSA), School Capacity Assessment (SCA) and Strategic Planning Application (SPA) for school basis. The teachers gained knowledge through discussions, brainstorming, games, and case study projects related to those subjects.
All of the materials given were designed for school management, including principals and teachers as the most crucial parts in daily school operational in order to be able to identify and build the synergy between their school and its local community. We took this as a significant concept to be aware of, since we feel the urge to prepare our schools to be an “independent school” which its roles and responsibilities are closely and inevitably to grow together with the community. We are expected the school not only functions to be a study centre, but also to be a community development center for the surroundings.
Based on the participants’ evaluation result, all agreed that this training had given them a very valuable insight as well as constructive thoughts to be implemented at their own schools afterward. As those teachers were committed to set further action planning, we from HDI Foundation also committed to guide them and monitor the project within a year ahead. During that, we are also preparing our self to build and designed more advanced and continuous trainings/ workshops for teachers to arm them with the skills and knowledge necessary to operate the school in a more professional manner.
