Lakatong Pulau Village in Takalar district is a region which is practically isolated from other villages. The only available road is in extremely poor condition and is not accessible to most vehicles. Most of the population here work as salt farmers during dry season.
It is heartbreaking to see the children here strive for decent schooling.
This village has a sole Primary School. Teachers living outside the village depend on motorcycle taxis. It costs them USD1,20 (IDR 12,000) a day, taking up nearly half their salary, most teachers prefer teaching elsewhere. Consequently, the lack of teachers has left many students incapable of reading even in 5th grade.
This condition moved the villagers to build a kindergarten with little money underneath a villager's stilted house, to provide their children with a basic education consisting of foundational reading and writing skills, before they enter the elementary school. They constructed the kindergarten with earthen floors and bamboo walls alongside a large chicken cage.
HDI Foundation, in February 2008, expanded the classroom, cemented the floor, built wooden walls and partition cage to create conducive learning atmosphere. The school is now occupied by 32 students in one shift.
