Pulo Gadung is an industrial area in the eastern suburbs of Jakarta, teeming with factories and warehouses. There is a high degree of pollution in the area. The place is also often flooded because it is below sea level. In such an environment, it is the children who suffer the most.

Despite industrialization, large portions of the people live below the poverty line. The 300 families living in one corner of the area barely survive by scavenging in mountains of trash, working in factories or cleaning services, all of which pay an average of only USD 30 (IDR 300,000) each month.

It has only one elementary school in the area for Primary 1 - 6 students crammed into 2 classrooms with earthen floors and a leaking roof. Teaching and learning was difficult, especially when it rained.

The lone teacher, who also takes on the role of the principal, collects a monthly school fee of US 50 cents (IDR 5,000) from each student. Some parents are not even able to pay this fee and most struggle to keep their children in school. Without a regular income, the teacher herself lives in poverty. When the children reach their teens, their parents pull them out of school to help scavenge.

In October 2005, HDI Foundation renovated and rebuilt most of the school building. The number of classrooms was increased to six. A teachers' room and proper toilets were also added.
