In this first 'self-help' school, HDI provides the materials while the villagers put in the labour. This kindergarten is unique as it is built over water. The school made of Gatal wood that can last for 20 years and it is salt water resistance.
The name of Nyandeisarisa was chosen because besides it was associated with Sopen historical sites, but also has a meaning as a place of activity where many people can gather and engage in it. Every school that was built by HDI Foundation should have the meaning, ie other than as a center of education, but also as the center of community activity for the development of local communities.
Sopen community's life is somewhat far more in progress compares to people in Owi island. This is because Sopendo village is still directly in Biak island and it takes only about 2 hours from Biak city. Sopen community is still conservative, but they are always opened to everything that is positive.
Education in Sopen is also far more fortunate from Owi, because here we can find 1 Elementary school and 1 Junior High School. Not too far from the village, there are 2 Senior High School and 1 Marine Vocational School since the last 5 years. Although many parents who just graduated from elementary and junior high school, but they encourage their children to go to school until Senior High School level.
After graduating from Senior High School, average youth work as fishermen or sago farmer or seek work in the city as rough labor or in mining company as a technical operator. Because of economic inability and lack of qualified university in Biak, just a few people continue their study to some academies and colleges in Biak, and most os them are male.
Although elementary school to senior high school is available, there is no Kindergarten level in Sopendo. Once again, it shows how lack the community awareness generally in Papua about the basic of strong formal education since early childhood. For that, HDI Foundation builds Nyandeisarisa Kindergarten for children age 3-5 for Sopendo villagers and surrounding..
