Isolated. One word that can represent Owi Island. The island position on Biak's island group for about 820 hectares which is rich in seafood and taro plant is somewhat isolated. To reach that location it is required 30 minutes journey by speed boad from Biak. Besides, there is no electricity in there. So, it is natural if 825 Owi's population do not know technology and global information.
To witness Owi's community closer, we can see there is uneven development in this country. Each day, life is lived so simple, where the fathers work as fishermen or planting taro, the mothers take care the family, and the children play freely or helping their parents.
Until now, formal education in Owi island is covered only by 1 Elementary School, that is YPK Elementary School. There is no other school in here. If they want to continue their study to higher levels, they have to go to Biak island. Imagine the distance that must be taken, transportation cost and accomodation expense if you want to stay. As a consequence, many have chosen not to continue their study, so that the average Owi's community is graduated only from Elementary school level.
On September 2009, finally Owi Kindergarten was inaugurated officially. The school was built on HDI Foundation's assistance by involving the people directly to built it. It has made the school so special. Direct people involvement was so exciting the parents to send their children to Kindergarten.
But above all, more or less have been able to change their way of thinking to be more independent, to keep on developing theirselves, and aware on the importance of basic education for their children. Today, there are 62 children who learn in Owi Kindergarten and 2 permanent teachers.
