Located near the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Teluknaga Village is home to 5000 residents, most of whom earn a living by cultivating coastal ponds.
Life for the village children mainly revolves around helping their parents with housework and maintaining the coastal ponds. Despite this, the villagers understand the importance of education. However, education for the children was provided by the sole elementary school building, which ran 3 shifts to handle 350 elementary students.
Sadly, many students drop out of school after a few years to help their parents and only 10% of Primary 6 graduates are able to further their studies in Junior High school. This is because their parents cannot afford to pay USD1 (IDR 10,000) everyday for their children to travel to the nearest Junior High School (10km away), as they are only earning USD 25 (IDR 250,000) each month as fishermen or factory laborers.
In January 2006, HDI Foundation constructed a Junior High School next to the elementary school to accommodate 100 students. It has 3 classrooms, 1 teachers' room, a library, washrooms and a field.
